Wild Feral Horses Of Assateague Island
wild feral horses that roam
Assateague Island. During
spring or summertime you'll
find them gracefully grazing
upon the dune grass and
leafy vegetation that is so
very plentiful. They are
peaceful creatures living in
harmony. People don't seem
to bother the majority of
them. However, I have come
across a few that were
extremely shy and tend to
stay hidden within the
marsh. Visiting the island has
become a passion for me.
Seeing these wild horses
live the way they do is an
incredible experience.
Assateague Island National
Seashore and Assateague
Island State Park was
established in 1965 to
preserve the 37 mile long
barrier island and
surrounding waters. It is
located off the eastern
coast of Maryland. Herds of
feral horses, ponies, sika
deer and whitetails are just
a few of the wild animals
living on this beautiful island.
The wetlands provide
refuge for an abundance of
waterfowl. Dwarf pines,
sand dunes, cacti, permisson
trees, beaches and marshes
provide the perfect habitat
for the wildlife that call
Assateague Island their
home.
